SUMMARY:Washtenaw May Count and World Migratory Bird Day
DESCRIPTION:Please join dozens of enthusiastic volunteers for the Washtenaw County May Count\, on World Migratory Bird Day and eBird’s Global Big Day. This event is a day to be out there counting all the birds we can find\, and it’s a super fun Big Day! \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER! \nJuliet Berger is the organizer for this countywide count\, which uses eBird to benefit bird science with its comprehensive results. The organizer divides the county into townships\, each of which has an Area Leader. Leaders recruit additional volunteers to count birds throughout their area. \nWe could always use more volunteers across the county\, as well as a couple of township leaders. Come join in the fun and go birding! \nWashtenaw County May Count Organizer and Compiler: Juliet Berger \nHere are the basics for volunteers: \n\nEvery counter should use eBird to record birds at every site you visit for birding.\nSave each list indicating 2 observers\, even if you are the only observer. This enables the sharing option via mobile devices\, which you need in the next step.\nShare each list with the eBird township username for the township in which you are birding. These usernames are in the table below. Please do this as soon as possible; preferably by the end of the day\, but certainly by the end of the weekend.\n\nPlease see these helpful documents regarding the count: \n\nWashtenaw County May Count eBird Usernames (PDF) – also shown below\nTownship species checklist\, sorted taxonomically (PDF)\nTownship species checklist\, sorted alphabetically (PDF)\nUnusual/rare species list and documentation requirements (PDF)\nWashtenaw County Map of Townships (PDF)\n2026 Instructions for Area Leaders (PDF)\n\nWashtenaw County Coordinator/Compiler: Juliet Berger \nArea Leaders: \n\n\n\n\n	TownshipArea LeaderTownship eBird Username\n\n\n\n\n	Ann ArborJuliet BergerWasMayCount-Ann\n\n\n	AugustaTim McKayWasMayCount-Aug\n\n\n	BridgewaterRussell RyanWasMayCount-Bri\n\n\n	DexterTBD/Juliet BergerWasMayCount-Dex\n\n\n	FreedomCarol WatsonWasMayCount-Fre\n\n\n	LimaCarol WatsonWasMayCount-Lim\n\n\n	LodiJuliet BergerWasMayCount-Lod\n\n\n	LyndonCathy TheisenWasMayCount-Lyn\n\n\n	ManchesterSilas BialeckiWasMayCount-Man\n\n\n	NorthfieldGreg JacksWasMayCount-Nor\n\n\n	PittsfieldJacco GelderloosWasMayCount-Pit\n\n\n	SalemJoe KennedyWasMayCount-Sal\n\n\n	SalineRussell RyanWasMayCount-Sln\n\n\n	ScioDiana KernWasMayCount-Sci\n\n\n	SharonFrancie KrawkeWasMayCount-Sha\n\n\n	SuperiorAndy DettlingWasMayCount-Sup\n\n\n	SylvanBob MaddoxWasMayCount-Syl\n\n\n	WebsterFaye StonerWasMayCount-Web\n\n\n	YorkTim McKayWasMayCount-Yor\n\n\n	YpsilantiBill Nolting\nDonna ParmeleeWasMayCount-Yps\n\n\n\n\nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER!

SUMMARY:Monday Evening Migration at Matthaei
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walk through the trails at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens to look and listen for birds during their northern migration. This leisurely stroll will wind through the woods on the Botanical Gardens’ well-maintained dirt paths and will involve ~2 miles of walking or less. \nThe pond often hosts waterfowl and shorebirds\, and the trails will take us through excellent habitat to look for warblers\, thrushes\, flycatchers\, the occasional cuckoo\, and other birds that briefly pass through Washtenaw County as they head north to their breeding grounds (and we’ll be sure to take notice of our local birds\, too!). \nAll are welcome to attend\, and please note that it is perfectly appropriate to attend for only a portion of the walk and depart as needed. New birders are especially encouraged to come along—the very best way to learn more about birds and birding is to spend time in the field. Please join us! \nVisit Matthaei’s eBird hotspot page to see what species have been recently seen at the Botanical Gardens. \nLeader: James Weir\nDirections: Meet in front of the main entrance to the Matthaei Botanical Gardens building at 1800 N. Dixboro Rd. \neBird Checklist Signup: If you are attending the walk and would like the eBird checklist shared with you\, please give us your email or eBird username here (you may do this onsite well): tinyurl.com/eBirdList \nAll are welcome and encouraged to join us. New to birding? Bird curious? No binoculars? No problem! There is no better way to learn than to get out in the field with experienced birders that love to help. Plus\, you get to meet awesome people. Absolutely everyone is welcome and encouraged to come out. We will have many pairs of quality binoculars on hand for anyone to use.

SUMMARY:Spring Migration Thursdays at The Arb
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Nichols Arboretum\, affectionately known as “The Arb”\, on Thursday mornings from March 26th through May 28th to observe migratory birds as they journey north. Participating in these walks offers a unique chance to observe species that are typically absent from our region during other times of the year. Many migratory birds\, such as various warblers\, thrushes\, and flycatchers\, pass through only during migration\, making this period the prime opportunity to witness these species locally. For instance\, birders have reported seeing more than 100 species during peak migration times\, including numerous warbler species. For a comprehensive overview of recent bird sightings and to enhance your birding experience\, you can refer to the Nichols Arboretum Hotspot Report from eBird. \nFeel free to join our Thursday morning bird walks for as long as your time permits; many attend for a portion of the walk and depart as needed. Your presence\, whether brief or extended\, contributes to the collective birding experience. \nWe look forward to birding with you this spring! \nLeader: Juliet Berger \nDirections: Meet at the east end of the arboretum at the Dow Prairie entrance. From Geddes Ave.\, turn north onto Riverview Dr. and stay right until it terminates at Riverview Ct. cul-de-sac. (Map) \neBird Checklist Signup: If you are attending the walk and would like the eBird checklist shared with you\, please give us your email or eBird username here (you may do this onsite well): tinyurl.com/eBirdList \nAll are welcome and encouraged to join us. SUMMARY:Birding the Pinky: A Conservation Fundraiser in the Northwest Lower Peninsula
DESCRIPTION:Join the Washtenaw Bird & Natural Alliance for a three-day trip to Michigan’s northwest lower peninsula. This trip is a fundraising event with a $100 suggested donation to support conservation and restoration work in Washtenaw County\, including our ongoing efforts at WBNA’s Searles Nature Preserve. Isaiah Clark and James Weir will lead the group and the trip is limited to 20 WBNA members. \nWe will travel to the Arcadia area in Manistee County on Thursday May 14\, and our birding will begin early Friday morning at Arcadia Marsh\, one of few remaining coastal marshes in Michigan that is visited by and home to scores of shorebird species and other breeding and migrant birds. From there\, we will work our way north toward Glen Arbor and the broader Leelanau County area\, stopping along the way to visit birding locations as well as a nature preserve known for extraordinary blooms of spring ephemeral flowers. \nThe group will stay in Glen Arbor on Friday and Saturday night and bird the surrounding areas on Saturday and Sunday. We will search for migrating and breeding warblers\, visit the famous Piping Plovers at Sleeping Bear Point\, look for Common Loons in historical breeding locations\, and hope to encounter least and American Bitterns\, rails\, Ruffed Grouse\, falcons and other raptors—including late-departing Rough-Legged Hawks—numerous sparrow species including Clay-Colored\, Upland Sandpipers\, Meadowlark and Bobolink\, cuckoos\, Yellow-Throated and other vireos\, and a wide variety of other migrating and local species. \nThis trip is designed to be flexible for participants. If you are unable to travel north on Thursday evening\, you can meet the group later on Friday in Glen Arbor (note: Arcadia Marsh is our best stop for shorebirds\, so shorb enthusiasts are encouraged to join for Friday morning). Similarly\, we will have birding opportunities all day on Sunday if you want to maximize your time and stay another night\, while those who need to leave on Sunday afternoon are welcome to do so. \nThe general rhythm for each day will be an early start with an active morning of birding until a group lunch. We will have a break in the afternoon\, during which participants can rest\, join informal activities such as a bike ride on the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail or a drive along Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive\, or do more birding! The group will reconvene in the late afternoon/early evening for more birding and dinner. \nMost of the birding will involve low-impact walking and mild hiking on paved paths\, dirt and stone trails\, and sand. There will be one ~2-3 mile hike with a section of moderate to steep incline on a gravel trail; while the hiking pace will be slow\, it may not be suitable for those with lower endurance or mobility issues. \nTo get a sense of the birds and locations\, you can review this eBird trip report from 2023 and this one from 2025. \nEach participant is responsible for their own accommodation and incidentals like food and drink. We will share suggested hotels and areas to look for Airbnbs or other rentals with registrants (expect to pay ~$120-$150 per night\, depending on choice of hotel or rental). These and other details will be shared with participants after registration. \nTo register\, please fill out this form. Note: We will send email confirmations after you register\, and we will update this site and start a waiting list if the trip reaches capacity. \nVolunteers are planning this event and 100% of proceeds will be applied to conservation and restoration\, including the purchase of tools for invasive species removal for WBNA volunteer workdays\, prescribed burns\, and other related activities. \nIf you have any questions\, please reach out to James Weir at jamesweir@washtenawbna.org.

\nLeader: Isaiah Clark\nDirections: Meet in front of the main entrance to the Matthaei Botanical Gardens building at 1800 N. Dixboro Rd. \neBird Checklist Signup: If you are attending the walk and would like the eBird checklist shared with you\, please give us your email or eBird username here (you may do this onsite well): tinyurl.com/eBirdList \nAll are welcome and encouraged to join us. SUMMARY:Ecological Restoration at Searles Nature Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Did you know Washtenaw Bird & Nature Alliance owns a nature preserve? We do! Searles Nature Preserve is a 50-acre natural area that protects the headwaters of Stony Creek. \nDid you also know that 97% of North American land birds rely on animal\, mostly insect\, protein to raise their young? Most insects depend on specific native host plants for reproduction — which means a healthy\, diverse plant community is essential for sustaining bird populations. Learn more here. \nJoin us as we remove invasive species and improve habitat diversity to support the birds we love. Tools and guidance are provided. Please bring leather work gloves if you have them — we’ll also have some available to borrow. Wear long pants\, tall socks\, and closed-toe shoes or boots. \nDirections: Meet at the entrance to the preserve on Bolla Road between Crane and Stony Creek Roads. Map here

SUMMARY:Prothonotary Paddle
DESCRIPTION:It has not been long since the beautiful Prothonotary Warbler began breeding along this stretch of the Huron River from Hudson Mills through Delhi Metropark and beyond. They sing their cheery song from close to their cavity nests along the river and are best viewed from the water. There are always a large variety of other birds to see on this great float. \nThe trip is eight miles long\, and usually takes about 3 ½ hours to complete\, but we’ll stop for good birds\, a picnic\, etc.\, and your car will be waiting for you at the other end. We will have a picnic spot picked out that is approximately halfway\, for those who wish to stay with the group. Bring your own picnic and beverages. \nBook your own boat(s) for the “Hudson Mills to Delhi Metropark Long Trip” directly from Skip’s Canoe Livery at paddlethehuron.com and review the details on their site. Make sure to select the 9am option on June 13th. On the day of the event\, if you are renting a canoe/kayak\, we recommend arriving at Skip’s by 8:30 to check-in\, park\, and pick up the required\, provided personal flotation device. \n  \nPaddlers with their own boats\, meet at Hudson Mills\, Rapids View area (map here) to launch by 9:00 a.m.. SUMMARY:Matt Hack: “Tracking Songbird Migration Using Geolocators”
DESCRIPTION:We are currently living in a golden age of rapid discovery explaining the mysteries of bird migration. A variety of new technologies are currently being developed to better understand how\, where\, and why birds migrate. A key tool in studying the biology of migratory birds is the geolocator — a small tracking device attached to a migrating bird that can reveal the journeys and destinations the bird experiences throughout the year. As part of his University of Michigan dissertation research\, Matt Hack has spent the past three summers stationed at the UMich Biological Station in the northern Lower Peninsula\, attaching geolocators to several species of songbirds that share their breeding grounds in the boreal forest but migrate to a wide range of destinations and climates to spend their winters. He has two primary goals behind tracking these birds — to uncover the timelines and destinations of their migration journeys\, and to use that information to better understand how different migration strategies can affect the ecology of these travelers. He is excited to share what he has learned in the process! \n

Map here
