SUMMARY:Texas Tour with Ben Lucking
DESCRIPTION:Each April\, a significant proportion of North America’s migratory birds descend on Texas in what is among the world’s greatest migratory spectacles. The Gulf Coast’s famed migration hotspots such as High Island and Sabine Woods see mass afternoon arrivals of birds that left the Yucatan the evening prior. Hooded\, Kentucky\, and Swainson’s warblers fill dark understories while flocks of Indigo Buntings and Bobolink find themselves in grassy verges and saltmarsh. Adjacent mudflats and beaches are alive with vast numbers of American Avocets\, peeps\, and plovers. Rice fields just inland hold plentiful Black-necked Stilts\, White-faced Ibis\, dowitchers\, and the odd Hudsonian Godwit. \nIn addition to the migratory riches of the Gulf Coast\, Texas is home to a rich diversity of landscapes. Heading West of Houston\, prairies filled with Scissor-tailed Flycatchers make way to Texas Hill Country. This region is something of a crossroads in avian diversity. Eastern migrants such as Black-and-White Warbler\, Yellow-throated Vireo\, and Least Flycatcher meet dry Southwestern species such as Cactus Wren\, Scott’s Oriole\, Scaled Quail\, and Greater Roadrunner; Southern species such as Green Jay\, Ringed Kingfisher\, Tropical Parula\, and Morelet’s Seedeater; and a whole cast of regional specialties such as Golden-cheeked Warbler\, Black-capped Vireo\, and Black-crested Titmouse. Heading further West\, the landscape grows increasingly dry\, culminating in the vast expanses of the Chihuahuan Desert. Rising up from this desolate landscape are Big Bend National Park’s Chisos Mountains. The wetter\, vegetated valleys high among these peaks are home to one of the ABA area’s rarest breeding birds\, the Colima Warbler. \nTexas’s diversity of habitats and location at the heart of the Central Flyway give it the greatest avian diversity of anywhere in the ABA area. The current ABA area record of 294 species seen or heard in a day\, set by a Cornell team in 2013\, was set using a route from Texas Hill Country to the Gulf Coast. This tour aims to be a relaxed pace\, extended version of that record day’s incredible route. We’ll begin on the Gulf Coast\, before making our way West across Hill Country and the Edwards Plateau to Big Bend’s Chisos Mountains. We will fly in and out of Houston\, and the tour will include a one way flight from West Texas to Houston at the end of the tour. \nMaximum of 3 participants with 1 leader\, or 6 with 2 leaders. \nDownload/view this PDF for detailed information\, including pricing\, a detailed itinerary\, and contact information.

SUMMARY:Restoration Workday at Searles Nature Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Did you know Washtenaw Bird & Nature Alliance (formerly Washtenaw Audubon Society) owns a nature preserve? We do! Searles Nature Preserve is a 50 acre natural area that hosts the headwaters of Stony Creek. Did you also know that Ninety-seven percent of North American landbirds require animal\, primarily insect\, protein to raise their young? Most insects require specific\, native\, host plants for successful reproduction and this is why supporting a biodiverse ecosystem of native plants is so important. More on this here: https://tinyl.io/93Ka \nJoin us as we work to remove invasive species and improve biodiversity to support the birds we love. Tools and know how will be provided. Bring gardening gloves (we will have extra)\, wear long pants\, tall socks\, and closed-toe shoes or boots. \nDirections: Meet at the entrance to the preserve on Bolla Road between Crane and Stony Creek Roads. SUMMARY:2024 Washtenaw May Count
DESCRIPTION:Please join dozens of enthusiastic volunteers for the Washtenaw County May Count\, on World Migratory Bird Day and eBird’s Global Big Day. This event is a day to be out there counting all the birds we can find\, and it’s a super fun Big Day! \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER! \nJuliet Berger is the organizer for this countywide count\, which uses eBird to benefit bird science with its comprehensive results. The organizer divides the county into townships\, each of which has an Area Leader. Leaders recruit additional volunteers to count birds throughout their area. \nWe still could use more volunteers across the county\, as well as a couple of township leaders. Come join in the fun and go birding! \nWashtenaw County May Count Organizers and Compilers: Juliet Berger \nPlease see these documents describing the count procedures: \n\nProcedure flowchart – a brief visual representation of the procedures and process (PDF)\nDetailed written description of the procedures (PDF)\nWashtenaw County May Count eBird Usernames (PDF) – also shown below\nTownship species checklist\, sorted taxonomically (PDF)\nTownship species checklist\, sorted alphabetically (PDF)\nUnusual/rare species list and documentation requirements (PDF)\nWashtenaw County Map of Townships (PDF)\n\nWashtenaw County Coordinator/Compiler: Juliet Berger Contact Juliet! \nArea Leaders: \n\n\n\n\n	TownshipArea LeaderTownship eBird Username\n\n\n\n\n	Ann ArborJuliet BergerWasMayCount-Ann\n\n\n	AugustaJim LawWasMayCount-Aug\n\n\n	BridgewaterVictor ChenWasMayCount-Bri\n\n\n	DexterTBD/Juliet BergerWasMayCount-Dex\n\n\n	FreedomBob MaddoxWasMayCount-Fre\n\n\n	LimaBob MaddoxWasMayCount-Lim\n\n\n	LodiJuliet BergerWasMayCount-Lod\n\n\n	LyndonCathy TheisenWasMayCount-Lyn\n\n\n	ManchesterSilas BialeckiWasMayCount-Man\n\n\n	NorthfieldGreg JacksWasMayCount-Nor\n\n\n	PittsfieldJacco GelderloosWasMayCount-Pit\n\n\n	SalemJoe KennedyWasMayCount-Sal\n\n\n	SalineVictor ChenWasMayCount-Sln\n\n\n	ScioDiana KernWasMayCount-Sci\n\n\n	SharonFrancie KrawkeWasMayCount-Sha\n\n\n	SuperiorKarl BrennerWasMayCount-Sup\n\n\n	SylvanAndy DettlingWasMayCount-Syl\n\n\n	WebsterFaye StonerWasMayCount-Web\n\n\n	YorkJim LawWasMayCount-Yor\n\n\n	YpsilantiBill Nolting\nDonna ParmeleeWasMayCount-Yps\n\n\n\n\nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER!

SUMMARY:Moth Night at Furstenberg Nature Area
DESCRIPTION:We had a great group at our first Moth Night! This iNaturalist project will begin capturing observations from last night as they are posted by participants: https://www.inaturalist.org/…/moth-night-at-furstenberg… \nTo see observations from all WBNA Moth Nights\, check out this iNaturalist.org umbrella project (aka project of projects ): https://www.inaturalist.org/…/moth-nights-of-washtenaw… \nTo see all moth observations within the City of Ann Arbor\, view this project: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/moths-of-ann-arbor \nA huge thank you to Susan Kielb\, Heidi Trudell\, and Michael Kielb for their time and expertise in making this a great event! \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nCome out and join us as for our first moth night of the year! Check out our Moth Nights of Washtenaw Bird & Nature Alliance iNaturalist project to view hundreds of observations with photos\, species details\, and more for all of our past moth night events. \nWhy care about moths? Ninety seven percent of all North American land birds rely on animal protein to raise their young. For most birds\, that means insects. And for most of them\, that means caterpillars. Without abundant moth larva\, there is not enough animal protein to raise the young of our beloved birds. It takes approximately 9\,000 caterpillars to raise one brood of Black-capped Chickadees from hatching to fledgling! Now\, think of all the birds you see out there. It’s hard to imagine the numbers required. So\, you can see\, moths are integral to the reproduction of most of our birds we love. They’re our allies in birding and getting to know them is a joy. \nThey are among the most diverse and successful organisms on earth. Scientists estimate there are 150\,000 to more than 500\,000 moth species. Their colors and patterns are either dazzling or so cryptic that they define camouflage. Shapes and sizes span the gamut from as small as a pinhead to as large as an adult’s hand. Most moths are nocturnal\, and need to be sought at night to be seen – others fly like butterflies during the day. Finding them can be as simple as leaving a porch light on and checking it after dark. Serious moth aficionados use special lights and baits to attract them. \nOnce again\, Susan Kielb and Heidi Trudell will guide us through the process of attracting\, identifying\, and enjoying these amazing creatures. \nSuggestions for Attendees: \n\nA headlamp or flashlight would be nice to have.\nNinja night with moths! Wearing black is the best way to keep moths on the sheet and not your shirt.\nIt might be nice to bring a camp chair if you would like to sit.\n\nDirections: Meet at the Furstenberg Nature Area parking lot off of Fuller Road (map).

SUMMARY:Prothonotary Paddle
DESCRIPTION:It has been a few short years since the beautiful Prothonotary Warbler colonized a stretch of the Huron River from Hudson Mills through Delhi MetroPark and beyond. They sing their cheery song from close to their cavity nests along the river. They are best viewed from the water\, and there are always a large variety of other birds to see on this float trip. \nThe trip is eight miles long\, and usually takes about 3 ½ hours to complete\, but we’ll stop for good birds\, a picnic\, etc.\, and your car will be waiting for you at the other end. We will have a picnic spot picked out that is approximately halfway\, for those who wish to stay with the group. Bring your own picnic and beverages. \nBook your own boat(s) for the “Hudson Mills to Delhi MetroPark Long Trip” directly from Skip’s Canoe Livery at www.paddlethehuron.com and review the details on their site. Make sure to select the 9am option on June 15th. On the day of the event\, if you are renting a canoe/kayak\, we recommend arriving at Skip’s by 8:30 to check-in\, park\, and pick up the required\, provided personal flotation device. \nPaddlers with their own boats\, meet at Hudson Mills\, Rapids View area (map here) to launch by 9:00 a.m. \n  \nLeaders: Juliet Berger & Matthew Spoor \n  \neBird Checklist Signup: If you are attending this event and would like the eBird checklist from this walk shared with you\, please fill out this form (you may do this onsite well): tinyurl.com/eBirdList \n  \nAll are welcome and encouraged to join us.
