SUMMARY:A Lens on Panamanian Wildlife with Keith Dickey
DESCRIPTION:Join WBNA member Keith Dickey as he shares images and observations from a recent trip to Panama.  Keith and his wife Alison spent 6 days at Canopy Tower and Canopy Lodge birding and hiking\, followed by 3 days exploring the coral reefs of Bocas del Toro on Panama’s Gulf coast in early March.  Among the 200 bird species and 120 other non-avian critters they saw and photographed\, highlights included a very cooperative White-tipped Sicklebill\, a skulky but curious Black-capped Antpitta\, Motmots aplenty\, Brown-throated Three-toed Sloths\, Panamanian Night Monkeys\, Confusa Tigerwing Butterflies\, Spinybacked Orbweavers\, Mangrove Upsidedown Jellyfish\, a school of Atlantic Spadefish and several Caribbean Whiptail Stingrays.\n\n\nLocation: Ann Arbor District Library – Downtown Branch \nThis program will be live streamed on YouTube at this link (click on the “LIVE” link appearing on our channel when the program is in session)\nhttps://www.youtube.com/@washtenawbirdandnaturealliance

SUMMARY:Visualizing Bird Song: Ram Ramamurthy
DESCRIPTION:Please join Washtenaw Bird & Nature Alliance for a talk specifically focusing on the use of technology to visualize bird songs and calls. It is akin to translating what we hear into a version of “sheet music”. This talk will be an introduction to the area of Bioacoustics\, the science of studying bird vocalizations. We will learn why birds sing\, how birds sing\, type of bird vocalizations\,  and birds’ ability to learn vocalizations. We will show how our recordings with smartphones can be transformed into “sheet music”! \nA 2022 survey shows that 96 million of us enjoy watching birds\, either in our backyard\, at a local park or on a trail. Birds are everywhere\, and watching birds gives a workout to our body and mind. Birding connects us to the environment\, gives us an opportunity to sharpen our identification skills\, and this enhances our mental wellbeing. Humans are fascinated with the diverse colors\, the mystery of long-haul flights\, and wide variations in bird song. \nSpeaker: Ram Ramamurthy \nLocation: Ann Arbor District Library – Downtown Branch \nThis program will be live streamed on YouTube at this link (click on the “LIVE” link appearing on our channel when the program is in session)\nhttps://www.youtube.com/@washtenawbirdandnaturealliance

SUMMARY:***Canceled *** Jonathan Parker with Seeds to Community
DESCRIPTION:This program has been canceled for July and will be rescheduled. Stay tuned… \n  \nJoin naturalist and Ann Arbor Parks Steward Jonathan Parker to learn about his project Seeds to Community. \nSeeds to Community is a volunteer-driven event series rooted in habitat restoration and ecological connection. They bring people together across Washtenaw County to collect\, clean\, and sow native plant seeds – rebuilding the kinds of wild places that support thriving bird populations. Their work focuses on forests\, meadows\, and transitional edges where native species once flourished. By grounding their events in seasonal cycles and local stewardship\, they give volunteers a hands-on way to participate in long-term habitat healing – often right in their own neighborhoods. \nFor the birding community\, this means more than just pretty flowers. Native plants provide the food\, cover\, and nesting habitat that sustain birds year-round – from May warblers in migration to overwintering sparrows and resident chickadees. Every goldenrod they restore\, every patch of sedge they replant\, and every invasive shrub they remove makes a real difference in the complex web of life that birds rely on. They welcome birders not just as observers\, but as land stewards – people who know the land through sound\, movement\, and attention. Your insight is exactly what we need to make restoration more responsive\, connected\, and enduring.

SUMMARY:Recent Bird Strike Research & Policy\, with Heidi Trudell
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a look back at how far window collision prevention has come\, updates on policies\, and new technologies being explored. 44% of window strikes happen at homes\, and 56% happen at low-rise buildings. Birds that survive impact have a less than 40% chance of recovery. Over a billion birds are killed each year in the US alone\, when they collide with glass structures; with native bird populations in steep decline\, it’s critical to take immediate action to reduce the human threats to their survival. Learn more about what government organizations\, nonprofits\, academic researchers\, and industry partners are doing to move towards a safer world for birds. Bird safe building codes are being passed all across the continent\, it’s up to individuals to educate their representatives on the topic and push for\nbetter standards. \nHeidi Trudell is tired of picking up dead birds. As a biologist turned architectural consultant\, Heidi has been involved with bird/window collision research and prevention since 2003. They have been consulting with architects\, the glass industry\, municipalities\, and campuses globally since 2015\, and as of March 2024\, have accepted a position as a technical advisor within Guardian Glass as Bird Friendly Specialist. Their passion for bird conservation has led to serving on Safe Passage and conservation committees for organizations in the Great Lakes region\, as well as starting the Facebook groups “Just Save Birds” and “Dead Birds 4 Science!” \nFor wildlife emergencies\, see ahnow.org – or the Animal Help Now app. \nA live stream of the program can be found on the page here on the afternoon of the program: https://aadl.org/node/630587

SUMMARY:Birding Taiwan\, with Victor Chen
DESCRIPTION:Join Victor Chen for an informative presentation on the birds and beauty of Taiwan. Victor teaches chemistry at Thurston High School in Redford and is the education chair of the Washtenaw Bird and Nature Alliance. He leads educational programs and BIPOC walks for WBNA\, hoping to bring more youth and people of color to the outdoors. Although he has visited his extended family in Taiwan in the past\, this was his first time as a birder. In this presentation\, he will share some of the birds and other natural beauty he saw during his family’s trip to Taiwan. \nA live stream of this event will be available at the AADL website approximately one hour prior to the start.
