SUMMARY:Monday Migration Evenings at Matthaei
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walk through the trails at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens to look and listen for birds during their migration. This leisurely stroll will wind through the woods on the Botanical Gardens’ well-maintained dirt paths and will involve ~2 miles of walking or less. \nThe pond often hosts waterfowl and shorebirds\, and the trails will take us through excellent habitat to look for warblers\, thrushes\, flycatchers\, the occasional cuckoo\, and other birds that briefly pass through Washtenaw County (and we’ll be sure to take notice of our local birds\, too!). \nAll are welcome to attend\, and please note that it is perfectly appropriate to attend for only a portion of the walk and depart as needed. New birders are especially encouraged to come along—the very best way to learn more about birds and birding is to spend time in the field. Please join us! \nVisit Matthaei’s eBird hotspot page to see what species have been recently seen at the Botanical Gardens. \nLeader: James Weir and guest\nDirections: Meet in front of the main entrance to the Matthaei Botanical Gardens building at 1800 N. Dixboro Rd. \neBird Checklist Signup: If you are attending the walk and would like the eBird checklist shared with you\, please give us your email or eBird username here (you may do this onsite well): tinyurl.com/eBirdList \nAll are welcome and encouraged to join us. New to birding? Bird curious? No binoculars? No problem! There is no better way to learn than to get out in the field with experienced birders that love to help. Plus\, you get to meet awesome people. Absolutely everyone is welcome and encouraged to come out. We will have many pairs of quality binoculars on hand for anyone to use.

SUMMARY:Moth Night at Matthaei - National Moth Week
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate National Moth Week \nwith Matthaei Botanical Gardens\, UM Entomology Club\, and Washtenaw Bird & Nature Alliance \nLast month’s moth night at Matthaei was a tremendous success—shattering all previous records with 219 species observed\, 743 total observations\, and an enthusiastic turnout of participants! We’re thrilled to return to this outstanding University of Michigan property in partnership with the U-M Entomology Club\, with support from Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum\, to celebrate National Moth Week. 👉 View and compare all of our moth night observations on iNaturalist here. \nWhat to Expect \nWe’ll set up several UV light stations in a variety of habitats throughout the gardens to attract different moth species. This is a relaxed\, come-and-go event with participants moving between stations at their own pace throughout the night. \nChat During the Event\nWe’ve set up a simple group chat for participants to connect\, share information\, and ask questions during the event. Only active during the event. No app or sign up required — just open this link in your browser:\n👉 tlk.io/wbnamoths \nWhat to Bring \nA light source \n\nTrails can be uneven and unpaved—bring a flashlight or headlamp\nA flashlight also helps illuminate moths for photography.\n\nAn iNaturalist account (optional but encouraged) \n\nUpload your own observations to help document the night’s biodiversity\nNew to iNaturalist? Check out this quick start guide: https://www.inaturalist.org/pages/getting+started\n\nDark clothing \n\nMoths are less likely to land on you than the sheets. Think “ninja night!\n\nCuriosity and questions \n\nMoth enthusiasts will be on hand to share knowledge and help with IDs.\n\nSchedule \n9:00 PM – Meet at the Conservatory steps of Matthaei Botanical Gardens \nOpening remarks\, introductions\, and a quick rundown of what to expect. \n9:15 PM – Disperse to explore the light stations \nWander\, observe\, photograph\, and ask questions at your own pace. \n10:30 PM – UV Wavelength Walk \nGather again at the conservatory for a guided walk using UV flashlights to search for caterpillars and other glowing lifeforms—or continue exploring the light stations on your own. \nEnd of Program – ~11:30 PM or later \nStations will begin coming down after 11:30\, but the exact end time is flexible. \nWhy Moths? \nMoths are essential to ecosystems and vastly outnumber their butterfly relatives—160\,000+ described species (possibly up to 500\,000!) compared to just 17\,500 butterfly species. They play a key role in the food web\, especially for birds: 96% of terrestrial bird species feed their young insects\, and caterpillars—protein-rich and abundant—are a staple. \nExplore More \nCheck out the Moth Nights of Washtenaw Bird & Nature Alliance iNaturalist project to see details\, photos\, and stats of past moth nights.

SUMMARY:Moth Night at Matthaei
DESCRIPTION:It’s time for another Moth Night!\nWe are once again hosting this  on University of Michigan property in partnership with the University of Michigan Entomology Club and with support from the Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum. \nMost moths are nocturnal and only seen after dark. While some fly during the day like butterflies\, most are drawn in at night by light. We’ll hang sheets lit with UV lights to attract them\, giving us a chance to observe and photograph these diverse insects up close. \nMoths play a vital role in the food web—there are an estimated 160\,000 described species (possibly up to 500\,000)\, compared to just 17\,500 butterflies. They’re especially important for birds: 96% of terrestrial bird species feed their young insects\, and most rely heavily on caterpillars\, which are soft\, abundant\, and protein-rich. \nThis year\, we’ll also have UV flashlights on hand to help spot caterpillars and other organisms that fluoresce under ultraviolet light—another way to explore what comes alive after dark. \nCheck out our Moth Nights of Washtenaw Bird & Nature Alliance iNaturalist project to view hundreds of observations with photos\, species details\, and more from past moth night events. We’ll be encouraging attendees to photograph and post their own observations to iNaturalist during the event to help document the night’s findings and contribute to community science. \nNeed help using the app? Visit this iNaturalist support page for a quick guide on how to get started. \nSuggestions for Attendees: \n\nA headlamp or flashlight would be nice to have.\nNinja night with moths! Wearing black is the best way to keep moths on the sheet and not your shirt.\nIt might be nice to bring a camp chair if you would like to sit.\n\nDirections: Meet at the steps of the conservatory at 1800 N Dixboro.

SUMMARY:Special Member Meeting: Name Change Vote
DESCRIPTION:We have a very important meeting to share with you all. On March 20th\, 2024 at Matthaei Botanical Gardens at 7:30 PM\, we will vote in an up or down vote to ratify our newly selected name\, Washtenaw Bird & Nature Alliance! Please plan to attend if you are a member\, as of March 15th or join/renew by then. You may contact our membership chair\, Diana Miller membership@washtenawbna.org to check your membership status if you are not sure. Only members can vote. According to our Constitution and By-laws\, our votes to change the constitution must be in person\, and fulfill a certain percentage of our members in attendance. Don’t miss the chance to help us make this historic change. \nI want to give you all an idea of how we decided upon Washtenaw Bird & Nature Alliance. In October\, at our in person meeting at Matthaei Botanical Gardens\, members overwhelmingly voted to drop the name of Audubon from our organization. Members wanted to avoid names that sound exclusive like ‘society and club’ and people’s names like Audubon or Wilson. There is a movement afoot within sister organizations across the country\, including some in our immediate vicinity\, to use the name Bird Alliance. In fact Detroit Audubon recently adopted Detroit Bird Alliance as their new name. We sincerely hope National Audubon will reconsider their decision to keep Audubon\, and believe that a consensus name among our sister organizations\, like Bird Alliance\, is a great way to move NAS in this direction. We took a poll of our members\, which was sent out in October after the meeting\, and over 150 WAS community members responded!! Thank you!! The most abundant name suggestions contained Bird Alliance. Next\, we formed a subcommittee of interested community members and WAS Board members\, who decided on 3 name alternatives from the suggestions of members\, all incorporating the Bird Alliance moniker. Then in a recent vote of the WAS Board\, we decided upon Washtenaw Bird & Nature Alliance. The word Audubon always meant more than birds to me and others\, so we added Nature to our new proposed name to encompass all we do. Ever been to a Butterfly Walk\, Moth Night\, Museum Insect or Herbarium tour or one of our Nature Walks? We are Birds AND Nature. \nPlease plan to join us at Matthaei at our March 20th\, 7:30 PM meeting to ratify our new name!! I promise to bake another BIG cake and we can all have a festive naming party of special significance! \nI am looking forward to seeing you all at the naming party!\nGood birding\,\nJuliet Berger\, President\nWashtenaw Audubon Society

SUMMARY:Joan Kellenberg: Michigan’s Remarkable Efforts to Save the Endangered Great Lakes Piping Plover
DESCRIPTION:Washtenaw Audubon Society and the Sierra Club Huron Valley Group have partnered to bring you this special presentation. After discovering the Great Lakes Piping Plover Recovery Team at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in 2020\, Joan joined them as a volunteer in 2021. She enjoys traveling north to spend hours on the beach educating park visitors about piping plovers and doing safety checks on nesting adults and new chicks. Last summer\, she went to North Manitou Island\, the largest Great Lakes piping plover breeding area\, to track a new plover pair. \nJoan lives in Ann Arbor and is a public health professional by training. She was an informal bird enthusiast until she discovered the Great Lakes piping plover. Now her family says it has become an obsession. She hopes to convince others to join the piping plover recovery effort! \n  \nThis will be a hybrid in-person and virtual meeting. SUMMARY:Special Meeting: Removing "Audubon" From Our Name
DESCRIPTION:There has been a recent movement among a number of Audubon clubs to remove the word “Audubon” from the name of each organization. The current board of Washtenaw Audubon supports a name change due to the historical evidence for John James Audubon’s slave ownership and racist opinions. Among the Audubon groups that have changed their name or are considering doing so are Detroit Audubon\, New York City Audubon\, Madison Audubon\, Washington DC Audubon\, and Seattle Audubon. \nThe meeting on June 21 at 7:30pm in the UM Matthaei Botanical Gardens auditorium is to present the reasons for the proposed change\, and answer any questions that members or any interested  non-members may have. \nWe have not made a decision on which name to choose if members agree that a name change is desirable. Members will vote at a future date on whether to change the name of the organization or not. \nEveryone with an interest in the issue is invited to attend the informational meeting on June 21.
