SUMMARY:Ecological Restoration at Searles Nature Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Did you know Washtenaw Bird & Nature Alliance owns a nature preserve? We do! Searles Nature Preserve is a 50-acre natural area that protects the headwaters of Stony Creek. \nDid you also know that 97% of North American land birds rely on animal\, mostly insect\, protein to raise their young? Most insects depend on specific native host plants for reproduction — which means a healthy\, diverse plant community is essential for sustaining bird populations. Learn more here. \nJoin us as we remove invasive species and improve habitat diversity to support the birds we love. Tools and guidance are provided. Please bring leather work gloves if you have them — we’ll also have some available to borrow. Wear long pants\, tall socks\, and closed-toe shoes or boots. \nDirections: Meet at the entrance to the preserve on Bolla Road between Crane and Stony Creek Roads. Map here

SUMMARY:Trail Maintenance Workday at Searles Nature Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Did you know Washtenaw Bird & Nature Alliance owns a nature preserve? We do! Searles Nature Preserve is a 48 acre natural area that hosts the headwaters of Stony Creek. Did you also know that ninety-seven percent of North American land birds require animal\, primarily insect\, protein to raise their young? Most insects require specific\, native\, host plants for successful reproduction and this is why supporting a biodiverse ecosystem of native plants is so important. More on this here: https://tinyl.io/93Ka \nDuring the heat of summer things are growing fast and end up covering up our trails and make it tricky to stroll through the paths at our beautiful 48-acre Searles nature area. Please join our Stewardship Chair\, Dana\, and other Searles Preserve enthusuiasts to trim back the trails. We will provide hand tools and gloves but feel free to bring your own hand saws\, loppers\, or battery operated hedge trimmers. Bring a water bottle and wear long pants and closed toe shoes. \nDirections: Meet at the entrance to the preserve on Bolla Road between Crane and Stony Creek Roads. (map here)

We’ll use hand saws and loppers to cut invasive woody shrubs and small trees (Common and Glossy Buckthorn\, Privet\, and Honeysuckle)\, and use our Buckthorn Blasters\, similar to bingo sheet daubers\, to apply dyed herbicide to the outer layer of the cut stumps. You can cut\, treat\, do both\, or just join us to hang out. We’ll provide tools\, gloves\, and instructions but feel free to bring your own hand saws\, loppers\, or chainsaws. We recommend bringing a water bottle\, and wearing long pants and closed toe shoes. \nDirections: Meet at the entrance to the preserve on Bolla Road between Crane and Stony Creek Roads. (map here)

More on this here: https://tinyl.io/93Ka \nDuring the heat of summer\, things are growing fast and end up covering up our trails and make it tricky to stroll through the paths at our beautiful 48-acre Searles nature area. Please join our President\, Matt\, and other Searles Preserve enthusuiasts to trim back the trails. We will provide hand tools and gloves but feel free to bring your own hand saws\, loppers\, battery operated hedge trimmers\, or chainsaws. Bring a water bottle and wear long pants and closed toe shoes. \nDirections: Meet at the entrance to the preserve on Bolla Road between Crane and Stony Creek Roads. (map here)

SUMMARY:Happy Trails Day at Searles Preserve
DESCRIPTION:One of our goals at Searles Nature Preserve\, in addition to ecologically restoring this high quality natural area\, is to encourage the community to enjoy it. We want folks to spend time here and explore all that a biodiverse ecosystem has to offer. To further this goal\, we must maintain a trail system that is inviting and accessible. Though we have put significant effort in to ecological restoration\, many of the trails are overgrown and could really use your help. Come on out and help make Searles an enjoyable place to wander and wonder by helping trim back enbcroaching vegetation on the trails there. \nTools Needed \n\nWe provide hand tools\, leather gloves\, cold water\, bug spray\, and professional guidance.\nAnyone that has\, and can safely operate\, a brush blade or brush hog would be a heroically welcome addition! Please contact Matt Spoor in advance if you can help with this.\n\nDirections: Meet at the entrance to the preserve on Bolla Road between Crane and Stony Creek Roads.

Searles Nature Preserve is a 50 acre natural area that hosts the headwaters of Stony Creek. Did you also know that Ninety-seven percent of North American landbirds require animal\, primarily insect\, protein to raise their young? Most insects require specific\, native\, host plants for successful reproduction and this is why supporting a biodiverse ecosystem of native plants is so important. SUMMARY:Restoration Workday at Searles Nature Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Did you know Washtenaw Audubon owns a nature preserve? We do! Located just a mile south of Rolling Hills County Park\, Searles Nature Preserve is a 50 acre natural area that hosts the headwaters of Stony Creek. Join us as we work to remove woody invasive species and create habitat for native plants and insects that support the birds we all love.   \nWith 97% of North American landbirds relying on animal protein to raise their young\, it is critical that there’s enough native habitat to support the populations of insects required for them to raise their young. Most of these insects\, largely moth and butterfly caterpillars\, have evolved to require specific\, native\, host plants for successful reproduction. This is why it is so important that we continue to foster the biodiversity necessary to support all the beautiful birds. More on this here.  \nTools and know how will be provided. Please bring leather work gloves\, wear long pants\, tall socks\, and closed-toe shoes or boots.  \nDirections: Meet at the entrance to the preserve on Bolla Road between Crane and Stony Creek Roads.
